Kevin Newbury

Kevin Newbury is a theater, opera and film director based in New York City. Previous Minnesota Opera productions include Anna Bolena, Roberto Devereux, Maria Stuarda, Werther and the world premiere of Doubt.  Kevin’s work, including over a dozen world premieres, has been seen throughout North America and Europe. Recent engagements include new productions for Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Barcelona Liceu, Santa Fe Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Carnegie Hall, the Prototype Festival in NYC, the Kennedy Center, Bard Summerscape, the Wexford Festival in Ireland, Florida Grand Opera, Opera Philadelphia, Portland Opera, Glimmeglass, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Lyric Opera of Kansas City and L’Opéra de Montréal. His production of Virginia for the Wexford Opera Festival won the 2010 Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Opera Production. His work has also been nominated for a Grammy Award (Bernstein’s Mass), a Drama Desk Award (Best Actor, Candy and Dorothy) and the GLAAD Media Award (Winner: Candy and Dorothy, Nominated: Kiss and Cry).  Kevin’s recent production of Kansas City Choir Boy (starring Courtney Love and Todd Almond) starts a world tour next fall. Other upcoming engagements include new productions for Canadian Opera Company, Seattle Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago. His first film, Monsura is Waiting, has screened at over 20 film festivals and will be released this winter.  He just finished production on his second film, Stag
