Evan LeRoy Johnson
American tenor Evan LeRoy Johnson begins the 24/25 season with a hometown debut at Minnesota Opera in Roméo et Juliette (Roméo) followed by returns to San Francisco Opera for La bohème (Rodolfo), National Theatre in Prague for Medea (Giasone), and a debut with the Canadian Opera Company in Eugene Onegin (Lenski). Future seasons include debuts with The Metropolitan Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago along with a return to the National Theatre in Prague.
Last season Evan made his debut at the National Theatre in Prague for Rusalka (Prince) followed by a debut at Royal Danish Opera for Madama Butterfly (Pinkerton) and returns to Glyndebourne Festival and BBC Proms for Carmen (Don José) and Bayerische Staatsoper for Otello (Cassio) and Tannhäuser (Walther).
Recent engagements include his debut with San Francisco Opera in Eugene Onegin (Lenski) followed by a return to the Ensemble at Bayerische Staatsoper where he was seen in Dialogues des Carmélites (Chevalier de la Force), Ariadne auf Naxos (Brighella), Salome (Narraboth), Manon Lescaut (Edmondo), Die Zauberflöte (Erster Geharnischter), and Otello (Cassio). Evan made debuts at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and Berliner Philharmoniker in Die Frau ohne Schatten (Die Erscheinung eines Jünglings) conducted by Kirill Petrenko, Salzburger Festspiele for a new Krzysztof Warlikowski production of Macbeth (Malcolm) conducted by Philippe Jordan, and a concert of Bizet and Bernstein at Musikfest Bremen with the Bremer Philharmoniker.
Evan joined the Ensemble at the Bayerische Staatsoper in 21/22 and was seen in La bohème (Rodolfo), Die tote Stadt (Graf Albert), Der fliegende Holländer (Steuermann), Il trovatore (Ruiz), and Die Frau ohne Schatten (Der Bucklinge). Additional engagements included Madama Butterfly (Pinkerton) for his debut at The Dallas Opera, and his return to Oper Frankfurt in a new production directed by R. B. Schlather. Other recent engagements include a debut at Lyric Opera of Kansas City in Lucia di Lammermoor (Edgardo) and the Verdi Messa di Requiem with Opera Philadelphia.
Evan made his Bayerische Staatsoper debut in a new production of Otello (Cassio) conducted by Kirill Petrenko, Oper Frankfurt debut in Barrie Kosky’s production of Carmen (Don José), and Glyndebourne Festival debut in Rusalka (Prince) conducted by Robin Ticciati. He also returned to Opera Philadelphia for La bohème (Rodolfo) and performed Der fliegende Holländer (Steuermann) in concert with the Milwaukee Symphony conducted by Edo de Waart. Mr. Johnson made his debut at Opernhaus Zürich in Salome (Narraboth), at Opera Philadelphia in Carmen Don José, and Des Moines Metro Opera in Rusalka (Prince). He made his German debut at Oldenburgisches Staatstheater in a new production of Carmen (Don José) and sang the Verdi Messa di Requiem with the Columbus Symphony. Evan made his European debut at the Norwegian National Opera in Calixto Bieto’s production of Britten’s War Requiem conducted by Lothar Koenigs.
