Camp Options

Find Your Voice! Middle School Camp (grades 5-8): June 21-25, 2021, 9-2pm

In this camp, middle school students who are interested in singing and performing will find just what they need! Strengthen your singing voice and expand your acting skills, all while creating memorable performances by sharing what makes YOU unique! This year’s camp features an opera mask making class with Mark Donnell! Kids with any amount of experience are welcome!

*4th graders may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Use Your Voice! High School camp (grades 9-12): July 12-16, 2021, 9 am-4 pm, and July 15, 2021, 6:30-9:30pm
6:30-9:30pm optional events on July 12-14, 2021.

For enthusiastic High School singers from around the country! Start each day out with a movement session—this year we are offering yoga for singers and swashbuckling! The days are packed full of acting and voice training as well as sessions on finding your voice as an artist, creating an artist statement, and building a final project that reflects YOU as a person and performer. If you like to sing, this camp is for you!

Workshop Options

Trans-visibility in Opera for Youth Singers High school workshop (grades 9-12): June 14-15, 2021, 5:30pm-8:30pm

This new workshop is designed as a space for trans and nonbinary youth who love to sing to find community, discuss gender issues in opera, and to learn about and meet trans artists working in the field of opera. The workshop will be led by trans artists, and we have an exciting lineup of guests.

Opera Artist+ Workshop (undergraduate, graduate, emerging artists): July 12-16, 2021, 9am-1pm, July 15, 2021, 6:30-9:30pm. 6:30-9:30pm optional events on July 12-14, 2021.

Are you looking for ways to combine your love of performing and of teaching? Have you ever considered Teaching Artistry? This camp introduces the tenets of Teaching Artistry and guides you through your first lessons. Students will have the opportunity to teach their lesson to the High School camp, which meets the same week! This workshop includes sessions on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and an introduction to Arts Administration.

Showtunes with Sara! Musical theater workshops for all ages, Saturday, July 24th, 2021

Middle school (grades 6-8) – 10-11:30am

High school (grades 9-12) – 12-1:30pm

Open to All Ages – 2-3:30pm

Do you love opera but also love musical theater? Are wondering how to take your well-trained classical tone to an audition for a musical? No matter your age or experience level, this masterclass with Sara Sawyer (School Programs Associate Manager) from MN Opera will open your voice, acting skills, and auditioning practices to include songs from the Broadway repertoire. A pianist from MN Opera will record your accompaniment of your favorite showtune and you will sing for Sara and the rest of your class, receiving valuable one-on-one training.

Please email Sara (Ssawyer@mnopera.org) with an attached PDF of your piece and any notes (tempo and/or special dynamic markings) and we’ll make you a professional accompaniment recording! If you do not have the sheet music, we can get it for you! Email Sara with your song you want to sing, and we will send you the sheet music and accompaniment track.

Tuition

Tuition for this summer’s Virtual Camps is free, with the option of making a donation to Summer Camps Fund.

Audition

No audition is required! If you would like to submit a recording or video prior to the camp to receive feedback from our staff, you may do so: at least two members of our teaching faculty will provide constructive feedback on your performance.

Participation will require a device with a stable connection to the internet and room to move. All materials will be supplied by Minnesota Opera.

Our Teaching Artists have over 40 years of teaching experience at all levels of age and experience, and we have carefully designed these virtual camps to encompass both skill-building and exploration, all while meeting new people and having fun!
