Richard Strauss as the “Second Richard”: Notes on Imitation and Innovation with Respect to the Wagnerian Legacy. Richard Strauss is sometimes dismissed as too much of an imitator of Richard Wagner in his operatic works, when in fact he exhibited a considerable amount of innovation and independence in the works that are best known to operatic audiences today. While respectful of many important musical and dramatic techniques pioneered in Richard Wagner’s music dramas, Strauss also experimented considerably with settings, story lines, and musical style to define a strikingly personal approach to operatic composition that still resonates with audiences around the world.
