Behind the Curtain: The Dream of Valentino
Look behind the curtain to see what it takes to bring innovative opera to the stage. Led by Minnesota Opera’s new Head of Music, Rob Ainsley, members of the cast and creative team offer an exploration of the music, history and design of The Dream of Valentino.
The Dream of Valentino is the only major opera by Dominick Argento that Minnesota Opera has never staged. Given Argento’s integral role in the creation of Minnesota Opera and his long artistic history with the company, Artistic Director Dale Johnson thought it crucial to program the tango-tinged opera about the legendary silent film star by this important living American composer.
When Minnesota Opera approached him about a new staging of his opera, Argento jumped at the chance to rethink and rework it. The composer will be the evening’s special guest, sharing his reflections about not only the creation of this piece, but about its recreation, including the changes made to highlight this production’s leading man, James Valenti.
