Youth Opera Circle & Youth Opera Studio

REGISTRATION FOR 2023–2024 YOUTH PROGRAMS NOW OPEN

Calling all aspiring young singers and performers! The Youth Opera Circle and Youth Opera Studio are set to kick off on September 18th, igniting the stage with their passion and talent throughout the 23-24 school year! In-person and video auditions will be held on August 28. Youth opera programs are provided at no cost to students or families and we eagerly invite enthusiastic performers who have a deep love for singing to join us for an unforgettable program year. Before securing an audition slot, kindly take a moment to read the information below.

  • Auditions are available in-person on August 28, 2023, or a video audition may be submitted no later than midnight of the day. An in-person audition is strongly encouraged and will be held at the Minnesota Opera Center (620 N 1st St, Minneapolis, MN 55401).
  • If the in-person option is chosen, students will audition individually in 7-minute increments. Please indicate your preferred time slot on the sign-up Google form linked below.

Youth Opera Circle is Minnesota Opera’s youth after-school program for young singers in grades 6–8. For the first time, Minnesota Opera will invite middle school students to the recently renovated Luminary Arts Center for a year-long training and performance program. Youth Opera Circle meets weekly on Monday from 4–6pm.

In your audition, you will be asked to practice a pitch matching exercise and sing a song of your choice. You may sing either a cappella or with an accompaniment track.

Youth Opera Studio invites students in grades 9–12 to explore opera in a pre-professional training program where they will sing, study, rehearse, and connect with their peers, strengthening their musical and personal voices all while learning about opera. Youth Opera Studio meets weekly on Monday from 7–9pm.

In your audition, you will be asked to sing a 60–90 second cut of a song (musical theater, operetta, art song, or aria). Please bring sheet music for the provided accompanist or contact Fei Chen ([email protected]) if you need assistance in finding sheet music.

Your inquiries and concerns are always welcome, and we encourage you to reach out to us without any hesitation.

With warm regards,

Fei Chen, Creative Development Program Manager ([email protected])
Dr. Daniel Fung, Creative Development Director ([email protected])
